The Micro-System-Technology (MST) generates technical (sub-)systems with function-determinant structures in the micro areas.
MST combines methods of the micro electronics, micro mechanics, micro fluidics and micro optics as well as developments of information, bio- technologies and nano technologies by uniting developments and structures from all these areas to new systems: * sensors, actuators and data processing are working together, e.g. optical sensors in a cordless mouse or bubble-jet ink heads in modern printers with microfine nozzles with heating elements even with own IT in the printer head or * acceleration and turning rate sensors to actuate airbags, * sensors in stabilizing and navi-gation systems, * instruments for minimal-invasive surgery, *endoscope-systems, *chemical sensors to monitor food.
MST develops and produces micro electronic circuits and micro me-chanical as well as micro optical elements. MST in the English lan-guage is often referred to as micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) resp. micro opto electro mechanical systems (MOEMS). In Japan they use the term "micromachines".
MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) are combinations of me-chanical elements, sensors, actu-ators and electronical circuits on a substrate resp. chip. (SoC System on Chip)
MEMS are made of polymers and the results are used in material research for multifunctional systems. In the micro system technology they are further used for mechanical, optical, chemical and/or biological com-ponents and functions.
Important examples of such MEMS are acceleration sensors used e.g. for airbags. Polymeric MEMS are e.g. polymer-Lab-on-Chip-Systems with inte-grated valve functions.
MEMS are useful when sensors/ actuators and electronics work together. Medical products as well as poducts for safety technology, sports, life sciences and logistics can become more versatile, simple, intelligent, small, powerfull by MEMS, such as * cell phones reacting to move-ments, * automatic PC shut down on strong shakes, * cameras, camcorders adjusting movements automatically.
